Treating Your Bunions

Discover the simple strategies that will have you easing your bunion symptoms in no time.

If your family has a history of bunions, then chances are fairly good that this is something that you’ll also develop gradually over the years. While bunions can be a real nuisance, our Houston, TX, podiatrists offer up solutions and strategies to reduce bunion pain and to prevent the bunion from getting larger.

Here are some simple ways to treat bunions without resorting to surgery:

Get Exercising

No, we don’t mean exercise in the traditional pound-the-pavement sense. We mean therapeutic exercises for your feet that can help to stretch and strengthen the muscles and ligaments around the bunion. Everything from toe circles and toe curls to rolling a tennis ball under the arches of your feet every day can help ease foot pain and stiffness.

Conquer the Pain

The main goal of bunion treatment is to manage bunion pain successfully without having to resort to surgery. The best way to do this is by turning to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications that you can simply purchase over the counter. Along with pain meds, you may also want to apply an ice pack to the bunion for up to 15 minutes at a time to reduce pain and swelling.

Provide Protection

Since a bunion causes the joint at the base of the big toe to jut out, this makes it more likely that it will rub against shoes when walking or running. Over time, this can lead to a painful callus. To prevent this from happening you may wish to apply a non-medicated pad over the bunion before slipping into your shoes.

Choose the Right Shoes

One of the first things our Houston podiatrists will recommend when it comes to caring for bunions yourself is making sure you are wearing the appropriate footwear. Shoes that have high heels or pointed toes are going to bunch up your toes and make your bunion pain worse. It’s important that you get properly fitted for any shoes that you wear and that you toss out worn shoes that won’t provide you with the cushioning and support you need.
