Your nervous system can be impaired as a result of diabetes, including the nerves in your feet. You may feel a loss of sensation in your feet, which can result in you not feeling pain. People who suffer from diabetic neuropathy are more prone to injuring their feet and not realizing it.

Because of the increased risk of injury, people suffering from diabetic neuropathy are advised to:

  • Always wear protective, comfortable shoes, and don’t go barefoot
  • Don’t use very hot water, electric blankets, or walk on hot surfaces because you can burn your feet and not feel it
  • Check your feet often for sores, blisters, or cuts
  • If you have open injuries, apply antibiotic cream and bandage the area to guard against infection

When you have diabetes, you should seek out the help of your podiatrist regularly, especially when you suffer nerve pain. Your podiatrist can help you get pain relief by recommending:

  • Topical medications or pain-relieving patches
  • Oral medications including anti-inflammatories, antidepressants, or anticonvulsants
  • Wearing an electrical device like a TENS unit which can block pain signals
  • Anesthesia injections to block nerve pain
  • Surgical options for relief of severe nerve pain

An ankle replacement from your podiatrists in Woodlands, and Houston, TX, can get you on your feet again.

If your ankles are weak and unstable, it can be a scary experience. You might be unable to move if your ankles don’t form a firm foundation underneath you to carry your weight. Ankle instability can be caused by a number of issues, but the good news is, your podiatrist is an expert at ankle replacement surgery.

Your podiatrists at Podiatry Associates of Houston offer a wide range of services to care for your feet and ankles, including ankle replacement surgery. We have several convenient locations in Woodlands, and Houston, TX, so don't hesitate to contact us.

How Does Ankle Replacement Surgery Work?

You may need an ankle replacement if:

  • You have fractured your ankle from an accident or injury
  • Your ankle is infected from an injury or medical condition
  • Your ankle has degenerated from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis

Before your ankle surgery, you will be given a sedative. If you have chosen general anesthesia, you will be asleep throughout the procedure. If you have chosen spinal anesthesia, you may be awake, but you won’t feel anything below your waist.

Ankle replacement surgery works by replacing the damaged cartilage and bone in the ankle joint with a prosthetic ankle joint. Then, you will need to wear a splint or cast and should elevate your ankle to decrease swelling. You will need to avoid placing weight on your ankle for a short time and use crutches to help you walk.

You will also see a physical therapist who will provide an exercise plan which will help you gain more ankle strength and flexibility. After ankle replacement surgery, you can expect increased range-of-motion, flexibility, stability, and better mobility.
